Sky Lake’s Very own Dr. Scott McCreadie published his first novel this year! Dr. McCreadie works in the Emergency Department and has been with Sky Lakes Medical Center for nearly four years. He began writing One Night in the ER about 20 years ago and the cases span his 22-year career as an emergency room doctor.
Dr. McCreadie began writing One Night in the ER to share his career with his family and to help his six children understand what he did when he wasn’t at home. None of the patients described in the book are Sky Lakes Medical Center patients but these patients are real people and real cases from Dr. McCreadie’s career.
The challenging elements of writing a novel for McCreadie were balancing working full time as an ER doctor and finding free time to write. It was also challenging for him to select the cases with the “most merit” for his book that best illustrated the experience of an ER doctor that also flowed for the reader. He wanted to pick cases that gave a broad view of emergency medicine and also told the human element of emergency rooms.
McCreadie started working on the book more seriously with the intent to publish in the last few years after meeting Larry Powers at a local writing workshop. Powers, a retired Oregon Tech Professor and published fiction author, became McCreadie’s mentor and connection to a publisher.
McCreadie doesn’t have any plans for another book or a sequel at the moment but would like to do it again; He enjoyed the process of writing a novel.
